Tourism: Baby boomers travel trends 2016

Gruppo La Meridiana, an expert in hotel and tourism industry, would like to present to you most recent travel trends for 2016.

As recent American research among baby boomers shows, there are several important trends that may be relevant to hotel owners in 2016. If you want to understand who your customer is, what your consumer will need and look for in 2016, please consider the following research findings:

Practically all of the surveyed baby boomers anticipate traveling for leisure in 2016. Travel was an important element of their planning for 2016. They had 4 or 5 trips planned for the year.

American research shows that most baby boomers planned both domestic and international trips. A few percent planned international travel exclusively.

The research revealed that there were 3 primary motivators that were driving baby boomers to travel. These were:

o   The desire to spend time with family and friends

o   The desire to relax and rejuvenate

o   The desire to get away from normal everyday life

Notably, many travelers, as of September 2015, have already booked their trips. As research shows one in ten trips are already completely booked by 2016. However, for almost half of the researched baby boomers travelling in 2016 was just in idea, which leaves the hotel owners an opportunity to provide them with resources and guidance.

Baby boomers do not appear to be overly concerned about budgeting for personal travel. As the American study shows they are also not hindered by the higher airfares. This affluence of baby boomers is a good news for hotel owners.

Research also investigated which items baby boomers wish to take on their trips. Among those with pets, only few will travel with them all the time. Instead, the items that that baby boomers tend to take with them on all trips are their medications, a comfortable pair of shoes, a camera, and sunglasses.  And different than the younger generations, baby boomers will also take a good book and emergency numbers.

Luckily for hotel owners, travel is still prevalent among baby boomers. According to research, when on vacation, baby boomers smile and laugh more, are more likely to learn something new, and have more time to spend with those they love.
