Lima 2014: reached important agreement on climate
What does the agreement of Lima say?
The document produced requires that signatory countries will have to submit to the UN before 1 October 2015 “quantifiable” and “fair” commitments in order to reduce emissions, as well as detailed information on actions to follow.
The goal is the adoption of a universal and binding agreement to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius (scientists, however, argue that to ensure stable climate of the planet on previous levels to the various industrial revolutions should prevent the temperature increases 3.6 degrees Celsius by the end of the century).
The text signed in Lima will be the basic text of the Paris Summit scheduled in 2015. From there it should come out a document intended to replace the 2020 Kyoto Protocol.
This agreement is considered very important because it also engages China and India, which has so far resisted any kind of formal commitment to protect their growth potential.
The critical aspects of the agreement
The text, however, did not convince the majority of environmental groups, who have described the agreement as “weak”, because – they say – the necessary anti–emissions actions had to be more consistent.
For Legambiente “the Conference of Lima ended with a dangerous setback in the climate negotiations“ and “There are still old barriers between developed countries and developing ones”.
For the WWF “It was very disappointing because it had begun well, there were some acts of many governments who were hopeful about the spirit in which it arrived in Lima. Instead, we found ourselves in front of the usual opposition,” says Mariagrazia Midulla, head of WWF climate and energy.
Greenpeace records “timid steps forward, even if the agreement remains weak” considering “that world leaders still have not been able to embrace the clean energy future, which is already at hand” (Source: Greenreport).
The importance of a green future
These international agreements can then be discussed and certainly they can be improved, but they remain important points in the path towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in a green economy perspective.
It is also essential the awareness by companies of the importance of their own eco-social responsibility, which, for example, it can occur even in small daily gestures valuable for energy saving.
