Meritocracy and work

We often hear of excellence and meritocracy in the labor market. What lies behind these two simple terms? The word meritocracy was used for the first time by author Michael Young in his essay “Rise of the Meritocracy .” It refers to a system of government based on intelligence and efforts produced by each individual.

If applied to the world of work , the term meritocracy simply means a system in which access to the labor market , earnings and career advancement are commensurate with their real ability , the so-called “merit” . A system that , ultimately, promotes individuals according to fair rules, and leaves no room for nepotism , illegal behavior and inefficiencies.

In this interesting presentation of the Forum on Meritocracy (Italy), some key elements are investigated in the perception of meritocracy in Italy. The survey reveals some sections of public opinion on issues such as the introduction of evaluation criteria enterprise , the value of seniority, the preference for Italian workers etc .

Here are some of the most interesting points .

Corporate policy in government selection?

Respondents were asked whether they are favorable or unfavorable to the introduction of corporate policies in the evaluation of government employees. This issue is a matter of debate between those who believe that the productivity of the state machine is not enough and who, instead, complains conditions of work not up to expectations. More than 70% was in favor .

Is age a value ?

What matters most, seniority or merit ? Which of the two factors should be of primary importance in the promotion and advancement of professional ? There is no doubt for the respondents, who show a clear preference for the criteria of merit ( over 80%) . No denying , however, that the seniority real impacts on the labor market , both formally and informally .

Italians first?

The results are split in two when the application concerns a very sensitive point in Italian society : ” All things being equal , should take precedence Italians ? ” This point is at the center of the political debate for years and sees a clear division between those who argue that immigration is damaging to the occupation and those who consider it a key resource for Italy .

Expertise or personal connection?

It is hard to believe that the results of the survey reflect what actually happens . ” Would you hire an employee from your knowledge or a professional selected from outside ? ” . Nearly 70% of those surveyed were in fact in favor of skills, although it is clear how much of the labor market moves outside of institutional channels and steps to knowledge and direct personal ties .

A meritocratic country?

The survey of the Forum for Meritocracy clearly shows how the current view of the world of work is crossed by opposing currents . Public opinion is split in two on crucial questions : can this country make progress towards meritocracy ?
